Extremely thin models banned in France

France has passed a new law in modeling industry. According to the law the models can’t be extremely thin. They would have to provide a doctor’s certificate attesting their physical health and body mass index (BMI) – a measure of weight in relation to height.

If a company/brand manipulates a model’s photos to make them look more thinner then they must label it photographie retouchée (English: retouched photograph).

The health ministry has taken this step to fight the eating disorder and aware people about the real beauty.

If companies break this law and hires models who are not fit (according to the doctor’s certificate), they could be charged with 5,000 euros (£63,500; $82,000) fine and up to six months in jail.

Before France, Italy, Spain and Israel have taken the same step.
