Legendary director, Bimal Roy, holds the record for most Filmfare award wins as a director – which is 7, while his total Filmfare award wins is 11.

Bimal Roy (1909-1966) stands as one of the pioneering and influential directors in the history of Indian cinema. Born on July 12, 1909, in Suapur, British India, Roy’s impact on the film industry is characterized by his commitment to realism and socially relevant storytelling.

Roy began his career as a camera assistant and later worked as a cinematographer before making his directorial debut with the film “Udayer Pathey” in 1944. However, it was with the release of “Do Bigha Zamin” in 1953 that Roy gained widespread recognition. The film, a poignant portrayal of rural poverty and the struggles of a farmer, received international acclaim and won the Prix International at the Cannes Film Festival.

Known for his nuanced storytelling, Roy continued to deliver socially relevant and thought-provoking films like “Parineeta” (1953), “Sujata” (1959), and “Bandini” (1963).
